Alexandra Palace Children’s Book Awards

Our Year 5 children and some very keen readers from Year 6 had a fantastic trip to Alexandra Palace on 2nd April for the Alexandra Palace Children’s Book Awards. Many of our children had read all 6 shortlisted books and all had voted for their favourite which was to be announced in a grand ceremony at the end of the day.

Before that, the build-up included a wonderful workshop given by Jane Elson (author of Will you Catch Me?). Although it might sound like a cliché, her talk was truly inspiring. All the children, teachers and volunteer parents sat in awe as we heard how Jane overcame severe dyslexia to become an author and play-write. She deliberately tackles difficult issues in her books and clearly has a deep understanding of the problems some children face as they are growing up. After a quick (persuasive) chat with Rhoda, Jane has agreed to come into our school and do some work with our children so watch this space… Later, Michael Rosen entertained us all in the newly restored theatre, performing some of his hilarious poems. What a wonderful day we had, and it was topped off nicely when we heard, to our delight, that Jane’s book had won the award!

Above you see some of our children with the talented Lauren St John, author of Kat Wolfe Investigates and many other wonderful books.
