School Meals

In keeping with our values at Highgate Primary, we want to create a culture where our children and staff enjoy and appreciate tasty, healthy food in a happy environment.

As a school, we aim to make sure:

  • As much of the food as possible is homemade and freshly prepared daily
  • Local produce is used wherever possible
  • Our own produce from the allotment is used when available
  • Children discover new flavours and dishes
  • The children and staff enjoy a pleasant dining experience
  • The teachers sit down to eat with the children when possible
  • Queuing times are limited
  • Milk and water are provided
  • We listen to feedback from children, parents and staff
  • We encourage the children who eat packed lunches to switch to nutritious school lunches
  • We teach high quality cookery lessons
  • To generate a passion for good food

Our Head Chef, Mustafa Szumi-Hasani, has many years of experience working in top hotels and restaurants. Mustafa is passionate about fresh, homemade, healthy food and wants to share his love of food with the children and staff. He is also a talented musician with a particular penchant for Asian food.

Fresh bread

We are fortunate to have a purpose-designed kitchen and dining area and every day homemade bread, salad and fresh fruit are available.

Our nut free menu changes according to the seasons and we like to listen to feedback from children and staff.

Cost of School Lunch

School lunch costs £2.50 per day or £12.50 per week.

Please ensure you pay online in advance.

Packed Lunch

We strongly encourage children to have a school lunch but if you prefer your child to have a packed lunch, please ensure that it is healthy and nutritious and does not contain fizzy drinks or confectionary. Any fizzy drinks or sweets will be removed from the packed lunch and returned to your child at the end of the day.

Free School Meals

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are eligible for Free Universal School meals paid for by the government.

However if your child is in any year group and you claim certain benefits,  your child might be eligible for Free School Meals, please complete the form below and return it to the office, or speak to the office in confidence.

Our Allotment & Kitchen Garden

We are very proud of our allotment which is just a two minute walk from the school. The children love eating their own produce they have planted, nurtured and harvested.

Children in Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 receive free fruit at morning play. Children in Key Stage 2 are welcome to bring fruit from home. No other snacks are allowed.

Birthdays are always exciting and we love to join in the celebration at school. The best way to celebrate your child’s birthday at school is to donate a favourite book to your child’s class library, signing the inside cover and having it read to the class.

Alternatively you could bring in a homemade cake or some fruit to share. In keeping with our healthy values, please remember that sweets and chocolates of any kind are not allowed. If you would like clarification, please speak to the office.

We would love to hear your thoughts about the school lunches, the allotment or anything related to food at school. Please use the feedback box in reception or email: communications@highgate-pri.haringey.sch.uk
